September 16th - 20th

We had a very busy week!  Last week, Phil Bildner's presentation was engaging
for all our students. He emphasized the importance of reading in your daily life.
He told them whichever genre they choose and are interested in will benefit them
in everything they do today and in the future.   He encouraged them to explore
and select books of other genres and they may find that they are interested
in those too. He also taught them strategies that he uses when he is writing a novel
or a picture book that are important in producing a "great piece" of writing.  Some of
these strategies we had taught them recently and it was funny to watch our kids turn
around and look at us (Language Arts teachers) smiling as he mentioned them.
Upon returning to class we reflected on what they had learned from Mr. Bildner,
in class, and how we could use this information as we write our compositions.

During this week I will continue to assess each student individually to determine their
reading level during independent reading. Tomorrow each student will receive their
Words Their Way word list.  These will be studied and kept in a black spiral notebook
that they will take home daily. This list will remain with them for a week or two until
mastery is reached.  Next week on September 25th, is an early release day. All
students will be dismissed at 12:45.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Have a fantastic week!
